ATLAS | QUALITY OF ENDURANCE

ATLAS, a collection from Odyssey. Mapping contours of sand seen under ocean waves, creating lined statement silhouettes. Waves are mapped in contoured forms on statement torques and cuffs. 

The strongest of the Titans, Atlas was responsible for bearing the weight of the heavens on his shoulders; a punishment bestowed on him after his defeat against Zeus, in retribution for leading the Titans into battle against the Olympian Gods for the control of the heavens. 

Described, in Homer’s Odyssey, as the god who instructed mankind in the art of astronomy, turning the heavens on their axis, causing the stars to revolve. He was known to hold the pillars far out in the Atlantic Ocean, which hold the heavens and earth apart; he personified the quality of endurance. His knowledge of the depths of all seas is emulated in the contoured parallel lines of ATLAS. Said to be slightly bent under the weight of the heavens, ATLAS is reminiscent of organic form and movement.
